In farm fashion, rototillers are in

OK, so picture this: you have a plot of land picked out for your market garden, you have decided the plants you want to grow, the seeds are ordered, the transplants are started, the ground is drying out and suddenly you realize that one and a half acre plot needs to be tilled to help control weed populations and loosen compacted soil. There is only one problem.

You are only one human and with a shovel or a hoe it would take an unbelievable amount of time and energy to till one and a half acres. This is where an amazing machine called a rototiller, or “lifesaver” comes into play.

Rototillers use turning blades to work the soil. They come in three main types.

The largest type is an attachment to be pulled behind a tractor. It is good for initial preparation of the soil, but not terribly well suited to a small-scale operation like ours.

The second type of tiller is in the middle. It generally comes with powered wheels to assist the user. These types of tillers can be used for in initial preparation of medium sized plots and for managing weed growth in between rows during the growing s

The smallest type of rototiller sometimes does not come with a separate set of wheels. This is suited for in between plants and in smaller raised beds. Due to its light weight, users must travel slowly to give the machine enough time to fully work the soil.

Rototillers are a great option for soil preparation. Though compaction can be a concern, they cut down immensely on the amount of labor involved in field preparation. Though the initial monetary investment may seem a bit steep, it is important to keep in mind that a lower level of frustration will provide a higher chance of a successful garden.
